The Purpose Of The Pre-Poo For Natural Hair

The Purpose Of The Pre-Poo For Natural Hair

@4cchronicles

Being a natural hair newbie can be challenging especially if you are new to our terms. One that is extremely important and often overlooked is the pre-poo or the process to soften the blow of detangling and washing hair prior to the act. It is an oil or conditioner applied to hair prior to shampooing.

What Is Hair Porosity?

Pre-pooing your hair before washing makes hair easier to detangle but it also keep hair moisturized as shampooing (especially with a clarifying shampoo) can strip it of the necessary oils it needs. Despite it sounding like just dumping a bunch of oil or a conditioning treatment on your hair, there is a right and a wrong way to do this so let's dive in and define and explain what to do.

How to pre-poo
You will first want to choose what products to use to pre-poo and we have a list below we love and find useful.

The best pre-poos are are usually natural ingredients like oils, creams and some fruits that are beneficial to hair health, such as avocado. Pre-pooing is very helpful if you constantly have to battle with your hair while detangling it due to a dry or brittle texture.

When you pre-poo properly, it helps detangle your hair easily with very little breakage. Because of the hydrating properties pre-poo is made out of, it helps to keep moisture in the hair.

A quick pre-poo guide:
  • Using your favorite hair oil, conditioner and any other calming natural ingredient you use in your hair, make your own blend of pre-poo that would work best for you. A simple mix that works well is coconut oil plus your conditioner.
  • Divide your hair into four sections an evenly apply your pre-poo through these sections.
  • Cover your hair using a plastic cap and let it sit for 10- 30 minutes, depending on how much time you have.
  • Rinse your hair and go ahead with your regular washing routine.
We always want to give you expert advice so I asked celebrity Hairstylist and Makeup Artist, Monaé Everett about what to avoid:

"Avoid using heavy oils such as Castor Oil and Almond Oil on dry hair. These oils are too thick to penetrate the hair shaft, so they make a great sealant. For best results wet your hair before applying a thick sealant oil such as these."

What Is Scab Hair?

Monaé has a deep conditioning treatment video that is an easy DIY recipe and excellent as a pre-poo.

 Now you have all the deets on why you need to pre-poo, how to do it correctly and how beneficial it is to your tresses. Share below what you love using as a pre-poo.
