3 Long-Term Transitioning Natural Hairstyles To Rock When In A Rut
The twist-out is one of the more popular natural hairstyles which allows for a uniform spiral or coil pattern in one’s natural hair. This beautiful style can be done on hair as short as a TWA or as long as hair down to your hip bone. The twist-out is a protective style that also stretches hair and helps many natural decrease problems with tangles.
This win-win style requires you know how to twist one’s own hair either with two strands or three. Simply place hair into twists and then unravel for your desired style and this can be achieved on fully wet hair (like right from washday) or on dry hair. Here’s a video to give step by step directions on how to create the traditional twist-out.
Mini Marley shares her regular twist out
Products Used:
• Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie
• Jane Carter Nourish and Shine
• DevaCurl Ultra Defining Gel
• Design Essentials Coconut and Monoi Deep Moisture Oil Treatment
Her method:
She sections her hair starting from the parting, which for her, is the side part. She goes on to apply her Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie and then the Jane Carter Nourish and Shine. She does the same to all the other sections adding water as she goes to help the product distribute evenly. She adds the DevaCurl Ultra Defining Gel to the section and then starts twisting. She closes off the twist with a finger curl and then leaves the hair till the next morning to air dry.

She prefers to sleep on a satin pillow, instead of using anything on her hair. When the hair is finally dry, she rubs in the oil treatment before unraveling the curls, just to add some extra shine to the hair. She separates the curls carefully to prevent any frizz, using her pick and fingers to fluff out the roots to increase volume.
Now, that’s just the traditional twist-out but there are others like the chunky twistout and the flat twist-out. Both styles are slight variations of the traditional but they give the hair a different look.

This natural hairstyle, regardless of which one you choose, can be maintained by either sleeping on satin, or wearing a satin scarf or bonnet. You can also refresh the style by retwisting nightly or every few nights and this style can be changed up once it gets old by adding a headband, placing in a puff, bun or ponytail. The twist-out is a go-to style for many naturals but for others it takes real practice to master.
