Not technically, but in a few weeks we will in full blown spring. It’s still cold outside with snow and ice but it is time to get ourselves ready for spring hair. I love taking care of a few housekeeping items during spring to get me ready for summer and that includes basics that many of us neglect towards the end of the year as we get ready for the holidays. If you’ve skipped some of these tips, don’t sweat it and just tidy up your hair care by implementing them now and scheduling them every spring. Your summer hair will thank you for it!

Spring Hair Trim

I know many black women still overlook the importance of a trim but if you’ve never had one last year or even last winter,  now is the time to get one. I get them twice a year to keep my hair healthy and spring is a great time of year to get one to start your year off right.

Hair trims are important to any successful hair care routine. For women with natural hair keeping up with a regular trimming schedule is critical for preventing damage and maintaining length. Seriously Natural

If you are doing more to your hair like coloring or heat styling regularly, you may need more hair trims than someone else who does nothing to their hair like me. Every six weeks was the norm when I was relaxed but naturals don’t need to trim hair that often. When your ends become frayed, raggedy or thinning, it’s time to trim. Let’s try and NOT wait until then and just find a great schedule that works for you and your hair.

Protein Treatments

Why do a protein treatment? Our hair needs moisture as well as protein and our hair is made up of a very hard protein called Keratin.  Too often that keratin gets broken down by our manipulation, chemical processes like color or relaxing and the environment.  Milder applications of proteins would be in the shampoos and conditioners and can be used weekly. Where you would find stronger amounts would be in Protein treatments and shouldn’t be used as often.  I try and do one every couple of months but by the end of the year, I often forget.

Spring is a great time to get back on track with those treatments because many of us were concentrating so hard on keeping our hair moisturized this past winter we may have forgotten the importance of protein.  My favorite protein treatment of all time was  Aubrey Organics GPB Glycogen Protein Balancing Conditioner but they have gone out of business so I really love using  and  Briogeo – Don’t Despair, Repair! Deep Conditioning Mask. and PATTERN Beauty Treatment Mask.

The same thing goes for getting a moisturizing treatment if you’ve neglected moisturizing your hair this past winter as well. The best way to do this is to make sure you are getting a deep conditioner on each and EVERY wash day.

Switch Up Your Spring Hair Products

Because the season has changed it’s time to switch up our spring hair products to accommodate the new season coming in. We need to step back from the winter hair products such as heavy creams and butters and winter hair routines like keeping our ends away from harsh fabrics and those cold temperatures. Now, protective styling can be done all year long, but if you want to step back from it for a while or give your hair a much needed break, spring is always a great time to do it.

Now, is’s time to get back to lighter moisturizers with glycerin or purchase your own glycerin at any beauty supply store and do a DIY with water.  In addition, use light oils such as almond, coconut or jojoba oil to seal in the moisture rather than thick oils such as castor oil. My favorite light oils are Jojoba Oil and grapeseed Oil.

The increased moisture in the atmosphere makes some styles difficult to maintain. Since the weather will be come really humid and our hair will be prone to frizz; we can minimize it with Eco-styler gel when doing a braid/twist outs and/or wash and gos.

You may also be coaxed into wearing a protective styles such as mini twists or braids or Havana/Marley twists. You can enjoy your hair out on some days and protect your hair on other days as a way to retain length. (If trying braids remember to let hair rest in between applications!)

Clarify your Spring Hair

I also love preparing my hair for the warmer months by getting rid of all the gunk I’ve been putting in my hair to protect it over the winter. Heavier creams and oils can cause build up and if you’ve noticed a dullness to your strands a great clarifying hair mask will do the trick and get your hair ready for spring.

One of the easiest detox hair recipes to use is a clay like Bentonite clay hair mask.  Bentonite Clay is composed of aged volcanic ash.  Bentonite clay is one of the many healing clays that’s been used for centuries in the removal of toxins. It’s now being used in alternative medicine as a simple yet effective internal cleanser for several health ailments.

1/4 cup Bentonite clay
1 cup water
favorite essential oil for fragrance (using one that also has cleansing properties like lavender or tea tree oil is even better!)

Simply mix Bentonite clay, water and a few drops of essential oils very well. Massage into wet hair and rinse off after five minutes. Do not use any metal utensils with Bentonite clay. The positive charges from the metal can be pulled towards the clay and render useless and it will not have any effect.

If you want to try another one, check out my post over at Seriously Natural that uses a tad more ingredients, but I give you a step by step guide on how and why I use it.
