Natural Hair 2025, What is Happening To Our Community?

Natural Hair 2025 is looking like this movement is waning and I wanted to see if others in the community are feeling the same.

Natural hair has been my life and livelihood for over a decade.  I went natural when we moved to Colorado and while I had no clue that it would take over like this, I knew the move was a big one.  The natural hair movement was BIG, I mean REALLY BIG, and Black women embraced their natural curls, kinks and curls in the early 2000’s.  Here we are, Natural Hair 2025 and natural hair is still here but in what way?

I ask because while the community has had it’s problems, nothing seemed to stop it from thriving, taking over the beauty world or empowering Black women around the world.  Yes, once again, Black American women have taken the beauty world by storm when natural hair took over and there was no stopping it  despite texturism and hair types causing confusion and chaos from time to time.

While we begin a new year, I wanted to ask the question on where we stood since it seems natural hair has taken a backseat to wigs, sew-ins and relaxers.  Some want to also add Loc’d hair or Locs but in my eyes Locs are just another form of natural hair.  Whether you are watching TV, running around your city or on TikTok and other apps, wigs, sew-ins and relaxers are big business and on most Black women.  What does this MEAN for natural hair in 2025?

Well, it means that there are options for Black women when it comes to our hair. Real options unlike previous years where finding hair products, techniques and assistance was limited.  While rocking an afro in the 60s or a press and curl in the 70s and 80s was an option, we actually have hair care brands that aid in promoting and preserving our natural kinks, curls and coils.

Despite that, this is just an option like wearing a wig, a protective style like braids or getting a relaxer.  Natural hair is just as prevalent on Black women as natural hair products are just as available online and in every drugstore and Target.   While the focus may be on wig installs, braid lengths and storytimes of women discussing why they are going back to relaxers, natural hair brands are NOT going out of business and natural hair is still as popular as ever.

It’s just not the newest and the latest and that’s OK.  It’s an option and isn’t that what we actually wanted?  For many in the natural hair community, we just wanted a SPACE.  We wanted to be seen, and to be have products and hairstylists who catered to us just as they catered to relaxed women.   I think too many thought it was going to take over and be the standard for ALL Black women and that was a foolish thought.

Having options should have always been the goal and being upset that many Black women are opting out of natural hair is not a loss nor a win.  It is a clear indication that Black women have choices.  When you look at it from that prospective you see how natural hair 2025 is a viable option for every Black woman and child here and abroad.  I’m natural and could never go relaxed and don’t feel the need to wear wigs or sew-ins.  I also no longer wear protective styles.

I love that I can change it up if I want to but also love that staying natural will not be a problem because there is real help out her as well as products to keep my hair natural.  Embrace the choices and know that natural hair in 2025 is just as popular, strong and beautiful despite what some are saying.  Natural hair is here to stay and we’re thriving, just like our hair!
