Relaxed haired women rarely used leave In conditioners so many women going natural have no idea what they are, why we need them and what they bring to our tresses. What you need to know first out the gate is that many of the products you used and loved while relaxed aren’t great for your natural tresses and you will also be adding new items to your routine with a leave conditioner in being at the top of the list.
Short Natural Hairstyles, What To Rock After The Big Chop!
There are three types of conditioners to familiarize yourself with:
Rinse Out
Leave-In
Deep Conditioner
All three serve a vital purpose to the conditioning and manageability to your hair. Let’s dig into what a leave-in conditioner is, since I get questions about them all the time on how to what to use, how to use them and which ones are my favorites.
Leave-in’s are light, water-based conditioners that have been specially formulated to allow for more frequent use than regular rinse-out conditioners. Rinse-out and deep conditioners contain ingredients that are designed to bind to the hair after rinsing. This can lead to product build-up if regular conditioners are used often and without rinsing.*
Leave-in conditioners don’t require rinsing and can be used daily without excessive build-up. Many leave-in conditioners contain humectants, which draw water into the hair. This makes leave-in conditioners perfect for moisturizing and preventing dryness. Basically, using a leave-in protects and hydrates your hair for lasting moisture and style.
Naturals use a lot of conditioner and many of you may not think that adding a leave-in conditioner to your haircare routine is necessary. However, using a leave-in conditioner provides the hair with several benefits. Leave-in conditioners not only provide moisture, they help to eliminate frizz, detangle and soften the hair.
Cute Natural Hairstyles To Rock When Transitioning
They also give you 2nd, 3rd or even 4th day hair. That is a plus and only means that nix the need of redoing your hair like getting back into the shower and rewetting your tresses. They revive an old style and keep hair from being dry and brittle which prevents damage.
Here is a list of the most popular Leave-in Conditioners that naturals love and swear by. Understand that you must wade through trial and error to find the best one for you and it will take time to do that. Do not get discouraged! You didn’t learn how to care for your relaxed tresses overnight so don’t expect to do so with your natural strands.

*Sabrina’s Notes
I personally do not use too much leave-in and find a rinse out conditioner does the job better for me and no, I don’t rinse it out. Blowing your mind? Sorry, but I’ve been rocking natural hair for over 11 years and do things differently from when I first went natural.
I use a botanical (plant-based) rinse out conditioner as my leave in so it is not adding build-up to my hair. If I had to pick a favorite Leave-in in would be Kinky-Curly Knot Today.
Do you have a favorite leave-in or want my opinion on one?

What botanical rinse-out conditioner are you using instead of a leave-in?
I love SheaMoisture MANUKA HONEY & MARFURA OIL INTENSIVE HYDRATION CONDITIONER. It's actually a leave-in or rinse out kind of conditioner and my hair responds well to heavier conditioners as a leave-in.
